Autodesk is increasing its focus on the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) verticals with its Building Information Modeling (BIM) and cloud offerings.
The company estimates the worldwide BIM market at $1 billion, and expects it to exceed $6.5 billion by 2020.
According to Sunil MK, Head, AEC, Autodesk India & Saarc, “The AEC vertical in India largely relies on 2D drawings which are static and error-prone. Many large projects therefore get delayed, which increases costs. Moreover, almost 30 percent of the construction cost is wasted due to erroneous planning, coordination errors and rework. BIM presents a solution for better visualization of design, better planning of construction and facility operation.”
He said that according to a recent survey by KPMG and RICS School of Built Environment, BIM is gaining momentum in India with 22 percent of AEC organizations adopting it. “Companies such as DLF, Ambuja, L&T, ITC, Shobha Developers, RMZ Corp and Mantri Developers have already given the mandate for using BIM in all their projects.”
Autodesk has more than 100 value partners of whom about 20-25 partners are focused on BIM solutions. The company wants to increase its number of partners by 15 percent by 2015, and is scouting for those who have a strong focus on, and a large set of customers in the AEC vertical. “Because BIM solutions require good skills for implementation, we are enabling partners with training programs to build and deliver solutions around it,” informed Sunil.
Autodesk is also getting aggressive in its cloud business and is aiming to increase its subscriber base by 20 percent.
The company is counting on its desktop subscription, launched in early 2014, under which it offers all the products in various suites. “We also offer AutoCAD 360 and BIM 360 which run on Android devices for anytime-anywhere access,” Sunil said.
